It is one of the public universities that was established on May 29, 2007 after the approval of Ahmed Necdet Sezer. The university strives to be one of the preferred universities in Turkey and the world with the quality of research, education and participatory management.

The university's president is Prof. Mustafa Ikaj and his assistant, Prof. Bulent Şengurur.

The number of university students, according to the statistics of the academic year 2015/2016, is about 23000 students, the number of faculty members is about 644 teachers, and the number of members of the administrative body is about 284 members.

The language of instruction at the university is Turkish. The university contains 8 faculties, 3 institutes, 3 institutes of higher education, 7 institutes of higher vocational education, 1 conservatory, and 13 research and application centers.
